On May 31, at the invitation of the Paula and Gregory Chow Institute for Studies in Economics (Chow Institute), two world famous econometricians, Professor Cheng Hsiao of the University of Southern California, and Professor Newey Whitney of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), visited the College of Economics, Xiamen University and took part in a doctoral paper presentation seminar. They give valuable guidance on the research work of seven young scholars from the College of Economics and the School of Economics and Management, University of Chinese Academy of Sciences. The two professors provided the young scholars with professional insights and constructive comments, which further stimulated their enthusiasm and interest in economics research.
Cheng Hsiao, Professor of Economics at the University of Southern California and Fellow of the Econometric Society, has served on the advisory boards of the Pacific Economic Review and Singapore Economic Review, and as the Editor of Journal of Econometrics for over two decades. As an authoritative scholar in panel data research, Prof. Hsiao has made significant contributions to the methodology and application of panel data econometrics. Analysis of Panel Data, his monograph, is well received in academia.
Whitney Newey, former Head of the MIT Department of Economics, Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and Fellow of the Econometric Society, has received nine grants from the U.S. National Science Foundation, and has served as Co-Editor-in-Chief of Econometrica, Associate Editor of Econometric Theory and Journal of Statistical Planning and Inference, and Co-Editor-in-Chief of Economics Letters. He has published nearly 80 papers in Econometrica and other top international journals in econometrics and economics.
